This year I have the great opportunity to be a part of a mentoring program with well-known and high esteemed CEOs or Board members in Sweden. In the last meeting with my Mentor, we touched upon the importance of having the right people for the tasks, and the joint strength that is created in a well functional team. Especially in times of changes, the team culture and clarity of goals etc. are crucial for success.

This interesting discussion got me thinking of the large change programs running in the Financial Services industry in Sweden at the moment and how a strong team would impact the speed of change. Also, Tieto’s own fine tuned strategy with go-live 1^st of Jan 2013 of course includes some change.

So, is change easier accomplished with a strong team? Is the change process smoother and easier within such teams? And can strong teams be catalysts for change in the organization as a whole?

I strongly believe in the power of the team; that great ideas are not invented in isolation, but in discussion with your peers, customers, trusted ones or even competition.  I also believe that change is easier achieved in a team with strong culture and highly motivated.

For me, the top-five characteristics for a Winning Team are:

• Participative leadership
• Using a democratic leadership style that involves and engages team members
• Effective decision-making
• Implementing a blend of rational and intuitive decision making methods, depending on that nature of the decision task
• Clear goals
• Goals must have personal meaning and resonance for each team member, building commitment and engagement
• Defined roles and responsibilities
• Each team member understands what they must do (and what they must not do) to demonstrate their commitment to the team and to support team success
• Positive atmosphere and clear communication
• An overall team culture that is open, transparent, positive, future-focused and able to deliver succes.

Corporations are in need of more winning teams to excel, and the challenge for the strong teams would be to still be inclusive to new impressions from other strong winning teams. ‘Cause still – the innovation comes from meeting and discussing with others, across industries, organisational belongings and functional areas. One of the greatest challenges corporations of today have is to form and create the meeting places for interaction between the winning teams within the organization. And by doing that, get the full power out of the company. My colleague Gabriella has interesting reflections on the same theme. In the same forum Per also reflects on the efficiency within a team, which is another important aspect of a winning team.

So, concluding, I am looking forward to continue the interesting discussion in my next Mentor-meeting. And I do believe I have a winning team ready to walk the extra mile.

Utvecklingen inom bank- och finanssektorn sker i en närmast explosionsartad takt och det är framförallt kraven på mobilitet och närhet till kunden via olika gränssnitt som driver på denna utveckling. För att attrahera morgondagens kunder måste bankerna vara beredda att tänka annorlunda och ständigt utveckla sina tjänster.
